Heirs of God

Have you ever wished that, somehow, you were the heir of some fabulously wealthy person? I suppose we have all been guilty of this a time or two. When we look at our circumstances — well, we sure would be grateful for a cash infusion right about now. We never get caught up, much less get ahead. We are always struggling to make ends meet — bills, house repairs, car expenses, medical bills.

The fact is, however, everyone who turns his life over to God is the heir of a fabulously wealthy person — God himself. The Bible says, “As many as received [Christ], to them he gave the right (or privilege) to be the sons of God” (John 1:12). It further states, “If sons, then heirs, heirs of God and coheirs with Christ” (Rom. 8:17). And as Christ is the heir of the Universe (Heb. 1:2), so the children shall inherit ALL things (Rev. 21:7). The scope of these promises is mind-boggling — an infinite inheritance from the infinite God!

While these promises won’t change our circumstances, they help keep them in perspective. A man can have a far more miserable life down here than we have in America — as the poor in many parts of the world or the Christians in various lands — and it doesn’t really matter in the big picture. If we have received Christ, then we shall shortly receive our infinite and eternal inheritance (2 Cor. 4:17).
