It Does Matter What We Believe

We live in a day when the minds of most men are inclining towards ecumenism — it doesn’t matter what we believe in matters of faith and religion. I am very uneasy with this position. If it doesn’t matter what we believe, then EITHER there is no God and religion is fiction invented by men, OR there is an indifferent deity somewhere up there who hasn’t revealed himself (in revealed religion) because he doesn’t really care about us, and therefore doesn’t care what we think about him, good or bad. Both of these positions leave men with a sense of meaninglessness or purposelessness to life.

But God does exist, does care about us, and has revealed himself so that he can have a relationship with us. He does care what we believe. It matters to him that we rightly understand his character, his redemption, and his purposes for man. It should matter to us too. We cannot rightly glorify God if we hold wrong ideas about him.

So what should we believe? The revelation of God found in the Bible — an amazing God, an amazing salvation, and an amazing plan for man. Do you have your doubts? Doubts are okay if you are searching for light. Then doubts are just questions you seek more light on. But if your doubts lead you to reject light or otherwise deal dishonestly with it, such doubts are not okay. Then they are unbelief.
